Strong, fast-moving, low pressure situated over northern Lake Michigan – this was the wind producer for this year’s Banks Blackwell Regatta on Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver, Indiana. Summerlike conditions and heavy southwest winds gusting to 30 knots on Saturday challenged the 23 high schools competing in this year’s event.
After a strong storm system rolled through Saturday evening, a more autumn-like weather system took hold. The racers were greeted with cool temperatures and gusty northwest winds to just try! 30 knots on Sunday. Many capsizes, collisions, carnage, and exciting high speed racing were the scenario for this year’s event.
The Brother Rice/Mother McAuley team was well represented and led by Emily Gildea, Chris Murphy, Matt Sheerin, Ian Reed, and Blake Weglarz.
