Listed below are all of the donor-funded scholarship opportunities available to the students of Brother Rice High School. Each of these scholarship opportunities has been made possible by the generous support of alumni, families and friends of Brother Rice High School. Some are offered in honor of the living, others in memory of those who have been called Home by our Lord.

Please note that scholarship opportunities marked with (*) require the submission of a FACTS student aid form.

Community-based Scholarships:

• Mrs. “B” Scholarship: Special consideration for this scholarship is offered to students from St. Walter Parish, Crusader Band members and those interested in pursuing careers in technology. A minimum 2.5 GPA is required as well as participation in extracurricular activities and community service projects.

• St. Germaine Scholarship: Student or their parent must be graduate of St. Germaine to apply for this scholarship. Applicants must maintain a 2.5 GPA and complete community service hour requirements.

• Tony Hanrahan Memorial Scholarship: With a focus on math achievement and leadership traits, this scholarship is available for students living within two miles of Brother Rice.

• Joan Heavey Scholarship: Student must be a graduate of St. Catherine of Alexandria. Applicants must be in good academic standing and demonstrate financial need. Current sophomores or juniors are invited to apply.

• Home Run Inn Scholarship: Students living in the Hometown/Oak Lawn area are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Preference is given to those students from a large family demonstrating financial need.

• Huber Family Scholarship: Students living in Evergreen Park or surrounding area are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Financial need must be demonstrated.

• Tom Mikrut Scholarship: Available to parishioners of St. Catherine of Alexandria, recipients will need to perform double the amount of community service hours required of Brother Rice students.

• Brendan Murrihy Memorial Scholarship: Students from Most Holy Redeemer Parish are eligible. A minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA must be achieved and participation in extracurricular activities is required.

• *Dorothy and James Parker Scholarship: Students from Queen of Martyrs Parish are eligible if they attain a 2.0 cumulative GPA and demonstrate financial need.

• Rea Family Scholarship: Students must be a graduate of St. John Fisher with a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA. Family must demonstrate financial need.

• Richard Stillman Memorial Scholarship: Students from Oak Lawn are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Applicants must maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA and their family must demonstrate financial need.

• Wills Family Scholarship: Parishioners of St. Bernadette are eligible for this scholarship which is offered based upon financial need and the student’s level of involvement in community service and extracurricular activities. An essay describing college intentions and plans beyond Brother Rice is required as a part of the application process.


Sons of Law Enforcement Officers:

• Jacob Schmitz Memorial Scholarship: Sons of law enforcement officers are eligible to apply. Awardees will demonstrate high academic achievement.

• Thomas Wortham Memorial Scholarship: Sons of Chicago Police Officers are eligible to apply.


Sons of Firefighters:

• Dan Carbol Scholarship: Sons of Chicago Fire Department members are eligible to apply. Applicants are required to be involved in extracurricular activities and their family must demonstrate financial need.


Sons of Union Construction Workers:

• Bill Hite Scholarship: Sons of union construction workers are eligible to apply. Their family must demonstrate financial need.


Students Interested in Community Service:

• Nancy Kalata Memorial: Junior and senior-year honor students with a track record of community service are eligible to apply.

• Tom Mitchell Memorial Scholarship: Students attaining a 2.5 cumulative GPA with a record of community service are eligible to apply.

• MOMS (Mustari/Orlando)/Memorial Scholarship: Students of families demonstrating financial need who attain a 2.5 cumulative GPA and offer community service hours over and above those required are eligible to apply.


Students of Irish Descent:

• Mary Dolan Scholarship: Students of Irish descent attaining a 2.0 cumulative GPA are eligible to apply.

• *Irish Fellowship: Students with two great-grandparents from Ireland who have attained a 2.0 cumulative GPA and whose family demonstrates financial need are eligible to apply.


Academic Achievement:

• Nancy Kalata Memorial: Junior and Senior-year honor students with a track record of community service are eligible to apply.

• Lawrence E. Platt Academic Scholarship: Sophomores are invited to participate in an essay contest and compete for scholarships. The essays are judged by a committee of Platt family members.


Students Interested in Music, Theater and the Arts:

• Justin Antos Scholarship: Freshman band members with a 3.0 GPA at the end of their first semester are eligible to apply.

• *Marlene Chocola Memorial Scholarship: Students with an appreciation for music or theater, achieving a 2.5 GPA, and whose families demonstrate financial need are eligible to apply.

• Richard Timothy Unsworth Memorial Scholarship: Students (i) successfully completing art courses at Brother Rice, (ii) interested in attending an accredited university and continuing their study of art, (iii) achieving a 3.0 cumulative GPA while at Brother Rice and (iv) whose families demonstrate financial need are eligible to apply.


Students from Families Demonstrating Financial Need:

• Dan Carbol Scholarship: Sons of Chicago Fire Department members are eligible to apply. Applicants are required to be involved in extracurricular activities and their family must demonstrate financial need.

• *Marlene Chocola Memorial Scholarship: Students with appreciation for music or theater, achieving a 2.5 GPA and whose families demonstrate financial need are eligible to apply.

• Daily Family Scholarship: Students of families demonstrating financial need who attain a 2.5 cumulative GPA and are involved in extracurricular activities are eligible to apply.

• Gerald and Veronica Ferrick Scholarship: Students of families demonstrating financial need who attain a 2.75 cumulative GPA are eligible to apply.

• Paul Gudonis ’72 Door of Opportunity Scholarship: Each school year, a freshman, sophomore, junior and senior are each eligible to receive a scholarship for one half of their tuition for the year. Scholarships are offered on the basis of financial need provided the family is able to pay the remainder of their student’s tuition balance during the year. Honorees are required to submit a statement of
goals before January of their scholarship year and complete an assessment of their performance against these goals before the end of the school year in May.

• Bill Hite Scholarship: Sons of a union construction workers are eligible to apply. Their family must demonstrate financial need.

• *Joe Johnston Memorial: Students of families demonstrating financial need who attain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and are involved in extracurricular activities are eligible to apply.

Thomas Ignatius Mitchell Family Scholarship: Students of families demonstrating financial need who attain a 2.0 cumulative GPA and are involved in extracurricular activities are eligible to apply.

• MOM’S (Mustari/Orlando) Memorial Scholarship: Students of families demonstrating financial need who attain a 2.5 cumulative GPA and offer community service hours over and above those required are eligible to apply.

• Dan O’Connell Memorial Scholarship: Students of families demonstrating financial need who attain a 2.0 cumulative GPA are eligible to apply.

• *Dorothy and James Parker Scholarship: Students from Queen of Martyrs Parish are eligible if they attain a 2.0 cumulative GPA and demonstrate financial need.

• *Daniel Ruzich Memorial Scholarship: Students of families demonstrating financial need who attain a 2.75 cumulative GPA and are involved in extracurricular activities, particularly sports, are eligible to apply.

• Bruce E. Sloan Memorial: Students of families demonstrating financial need who attain a 2.5 cumulative GPA are eligible to apply.

• Richard Stillman Memorial Scholarship: Students from Oak Lawn are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Applicants must maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA and their family must demonstrate financial need.

• Richard Timothy Unsworth Memorial Scholarship: Students (i) successfully completing art courses at Brother Rice, (ii) interested in attending an accredited university and continuing their study of art, (ii) achieving a 3.0 cumulative GPA while at Brother Rice and (iv) whose families demonstrate financial need are eligible to apply.

• Br. Jay Toole Scholarship: Current students of families demonstrating financial hardship. Applicants must achieve a cumulative. 2.0 GPA and must have a record of
community service.

• Wills Family Scholarship: Parishioners of St. Bernadette are eligible for this scholarship which is offered based upon financial need, the student’s level of involvement in community service and extracurricular activities. An essay describing college intentions and plans beyond Brother Rice is required as a part of the application process.
