Luke McGinnis ’16 Performs in Germany

Luke McGinnis ’16 is a member of the VU Chorale at Valparaiso University. The Chorale has been
recognized internationally as a premiere collegiate choral ensemble, dedicated to performing works that celebrate the University’s Lutheran heritage. As a result, The Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, invited the Valparaiso University Chorale to be the only international choir present at the historic occasion of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation in Wittenberg, Germany.

Luke traveled with this group for a tour of Germany for twelve days centered around a concert festival in the Castle Church on October 31, 2017, 500 years to the day of Luther’s Reformation. In addition, he performed in St. Thomas Church in Leipzig and join the Thomanerchor (choir founded by Johann Sebastian Bach himself) for the Reformation festival service and the weekend services. Luke sang two solos, one in Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and the other on the hymn “Bless the Lord.”

Because of this historic event and honor to Valpo, the university commissioned a new work by composer Jake Runestad titled Into the Light. The piece, written for orchestra and choir, features an ecumenical message of love and reform in a broken world with text by Frederick Douglass, John the Evangelist, Martin Luther, Mechthild von Magdeburg, and other reformers of world history. This piece is incredibly moving and was commissioned for this observation to “move beyond fear and onto a path of love, compassion, and kindness.”
